Re edited VHS clips from our journey from Central London to Norwich, where I was involved in the naming a class 47....clips soon. Very few fellow photographers around 30 years ago, let alone ones with video cameras.Since I bought a new VHS tape recorder recently, I've been amazed at the quality of these old tapes and the fact I didn't record of them as most friends did back then!

At Whitland we also record 37402 with Virgin stock on their way to Fishguard. Many favorite liveries feature on the 158s and 153s too.

Просмотров 89021 день назад
The end of June 2024 saw the Cardiff-Manchester Piccadilly services pass through Pontypool and New Inn non stop. Despite the brand new large car park and footbridge/lifts being installed, these trains are not stopping in the new timetable! Part 2 and we're up at Treherbert to catch the occasional FLIRT venturing out on the line before the trams take over; next year?

Passing the large signal box at Tondu we exchange the token for single line working and pass the two redundant lines, now overgrown. These services from Maesteg are for Gloucester and Cheltenham a journey of 85 and 91 miles respectively

These clips were take on the "Preview Day". Ticket holders only, so even with an early start, recording these images on a crowded day ( with other photographers) was quite a task. I wonder how many of the exhibits from 20 years ago are still running, and where are they stabled. Let me know if you have any further information. Thanks in advance...Mike

Hi Mike, as you might recall, I was born & bred in South Wales and so have a strong interest in the GWR/BR(W), and thus your library of work. But these days I live about 13 miles south of Norwich, I found this video very interesting. I am fairly familiar with the Great Eastwen Mainline, and whilst the motive power and rolling stock have changed out of all recognition, there are many aspects of Liverpool St, Ipswich, and Norwich stations that are still identifiable today in you film. Thanks for sharing.
Great set of videos, thanks for putting them up.
The whole line has been transformed, but a specific station still remains shut. I guess that will reopen when the metro takes effect.
Nice video!
That was long " day out" but all worthwhile with those 37s and Virgin stock too
Voyagers on diversions?
No we had them into Wales " back then"
@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways I got you, thanks.
Interesting test trains ngl. I also think that they used back in the day alot of driving trailers that used to be parts of first generation EMUs or DMUs
Have you watched the next video in West Wales?.......Sorry what's ngl
@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways Not Gonna Lie
Thanks.....at 81 years of age I'm not into these terms! Sorry.
I like your videos but I wish you would let us see the numbers on the locomotives. Cheers.
Back in 1997 I didn't know I was going to share these clips. I noted their numbers in books..remember those days?
Had a look on Six Bells Junction. Seems like the tour missed most the freight branches it was supposed to do. Was that a bit of a let down at the time ? I think the leg stretch at Preston is platform 12 at Crewe.
Oop! So I did make one mistake, thanks for your help. It's a long job going through these old VHS 3 hour tapes and re editing. At the time of recording You Tube hadn't even been thought about, let alone sharing on the internet Thanks again
Your videos are always much appreciated. As you say it is great to be able to share these memories of the 'recent' past on You Tube.
@@nelson408. Still plenty more to come, I have over 700 x 1 hour DV tapes to re edit! Just takes time
Ohhh yes. I was on this tour from Newport on the Friday night. Bailed at New Street on the return, then back to Coventry for a well earned sleep! Great tour and a great upload. Thank you Mike.
Plenty of train spotters on the platforms
much quieter in 2024,,no 59s through Cardiff anymore
Great video thanks for sharing John
More to come soon, just takes time to re edit these old tapes
An incredible piece of footage captured by Mike Price. It does not seem like 28 years ago! Thanks for sharing MW👍
Some fantastic footage, thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed that. 👍
The line between Barry and Aberthaw was shut due to engineering work. The loco ran as OZ82 from Canton via Bridgend and we then ran as 4Z82 to Crewe P. A. D. It was a long day and the last time I drove 47212, I believe it was scrapped early the following year.. Hope that answer your question
Always great to see 47's on heavy freight moves! 🚂👍
I agree!
Part of a grand day out, not helped by that broken rail at Briton ferry. Glad to have provided some entertainment. Long time ago.
Why did the train come to Briton Ferry rather than go direct from the cement works to Newport? We didn't have much info. back in 2002?
Better days. See HENTO name vandalised . Named after Ron Henty, Canton fitter.
Thanks for the journey totally enjoyed the trains are grand!!😎🚃🚃🚃🚃🇬🇧
Great video brought back some memories of waiting to tip on those roads and seeing 37411 before we named it at Newport
excellent video! nide to see the 59s in the old liveries on film.
Worked on the class 59's a lot. Still going strong these days on 4000 tonne stone trains out of the Mendips with its EMD 16-645E3C GM engine. DBC had all the 59'2s when I was with them
Another interesting video Mike, brings back a few memories, the shot from the carriage window reminds me of walking down that bit of track to clip the T3/4 points, always seems to have been on a wet night! I seem to remember that Bill Clear was driving the class 59, He was an ex mobile plant driver at Aberthaw.
I fitted its nameplates
Thanks for the video Mike, a pair of beauties there, shame the Vale of Glamorgan had too go!!😎🇬🇧
why isnt the car park open?
I believe there's a problem with the "final handover" between the contractor and Network Rail. I don't have any more inside in formation, sorry. I only the cameraman!
Gwent County Council is also slow with the paperwork.@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways
Thanks for the video Mike, definitely coal from times gone by!!😎🚂🇬🇧
I went to the same primary school in *New Zealand* as O V Bullied attended. He attended circa 1885 and I attended circa 1958. Edit: Born New Zealand 1882, would have started his education in 1887.
Why can’t we have these trains on the journey from Swansea to Shrewsbury on the central Wales line??
Too long for the platforms at eg Knucklas and Bucknelll.
Wow. Maesteg has never had it so good! Looking forward to your trip up to Merthyr once they've completed the OLE installation. Srill think dropping the YWP on the front of trains is a mistake. The headlights just don't catch the eye as well. It was such a simple but effective safety measure.
The acceleration looked quite good for a DMU. Is the ride comfortable? The lineside vegetation is in desperate need of cutting back. Was the Maesteg line transferred to TfW or is it still Network Rail. It would be a shame to see the train paintwork scratched. I could help but notice that when the two guys went into the signal box, one had the top half of an orange overall and the other had the trousers. Are they sharing?
I don’t think the ride of the Class 197s is particularly good. When heavily loaded the ride is hard. All the Valley Lines have become heavily overgrown as there are no longer any trackside fires! Where work has been done in connection with the South Wales Metro and electrification then vegetation has been cleared.
Another great video. Those trains seem to be massively over and above what apparently is needed on that route though.
Some of them have got food preparation areas on them
They do "fill up" from Cardiff, to either Gloucester or Cheltenham
@@johnUB4478The food preparation areas really are a waste of space on those trains imho. Rather have the space tbh. Went on one from Cardiff to Manchester (was a two car) absolutely packed, no trolly on board, and in those instances you have to question the logic of having that area.
@@timlewis1165 I agree. Especially if they're not going to use them
It would be fantastic to see steam traction in Southport again.
Would enough tickets be sold to make one viable, I do wonder. I was a member at Barry, plenty came to take photos but did not ride on the trains and we were spending £200 on coal alone !
@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways if I had the unlimited funds like the £180 million on the upcoming Euromillions, id try and finance something like this as steam hasn't been seen in Southport since 2012 and steam engines are popular even with those who aren't railway enthusiasts. We should have had steam in Southport in 2013 for a railtour from Southport to Holyhead but the rostered engine Galatea still wasn't ready (this had been planned to be it's inaugural railtour after restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition but it didn't go out on test intime) & 10A was going through a motive power crisis at the time so the tour got diesel hauled. Things could be different now in the 2020's as tours we're not as well advertised back then & there was no such thing as the internet aswell as proper home PC's. When they ran that Roses Express steam tour from Southport to York on 4th April 2012 which was hauled by 48151 I remember seeing posters advertising that trip around Southport. Within a short space of time that tour was actually a complete sell out. If I did manage to plan some id have it where two seperate trains ran with around 6 or 7 coaches (depends on which platform though, 6 is the longest and easily managed 11 coaches plus a 47 and 48151). Each train rake would be with a different steam engine and a diesel (37 or 47) acted as station pilot to move the coaches into and out of the station. I know they couldn't run around in Wigan Wallgate station now as timetables are tighter with more trains but I think they could perform the run around just outside of Wigan in a loop. With servicing I think they could use the engineers siding opposite what was the excursion platforms which is now occupied by Asda and there is a road access gate at Windsor Road opposite the footbridge so a tanker or coal truck could get down. Should they need to turn the locos there is also a triangle in Southport, but it would depend on if there weren't any Merseyrail units blocking the tracks and if they could access platform 3 as the line from the Manchester route onto that triangle was lifted in the 60's and the avoiding line has long gone.
An interesting day.👍
It would be nice to see RailFest make a return for next year
Great video Mike, thanks for sharing. Kind regards, Jake.
I visited, although not on this day, I managed to meet Alan Peglar and Richard Branson.
Yes, interesting to see what locos were the in thing then, as such most have disappeared in today's world!
20 years ago :(:( yes ... went there for York , and that just happened to be on at the same time. All those sidings have gone now ??
The sidings are there but they have now cut off the connection to the mainline
The class 197s now work regularly so ebbw vale
Why are the 175s now being taken to Landore?
Your video is utter shite, the wasn't how the gardens looked at all, the footage you show of a run down woodland area is the old lane from the park into town, now a Waitrose car park. THIS MAN IS A LIAR
How can this be 27 years ago?! Seems like just a few years ago you could witness the various types of traction and those liveries. Time just flies past.
I'm just so pleased I kept all my tapes, not having invented YOU TUBE back then !
Thanks for the video Mike, definitely an end to an era, thanks for sharing!!😎🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🇬🇧
5:54Excellent bowl 🙃
Just my bad luck, 59 don't run here anymore too !
Thanks for the video, totally enjoyed the 56 sounds awesome going up the bank!!😎🚃🚃🚃🇬🇧
2:26 seeing *that* certainly caught me off guard.
I used to change at Newport when travelling in this era from Hereford back to London. It was always such a busy, bustling place - all sorts of interesting things ticking over in the sidings.
Are the time captions a bit out ?. Your first one of 10.58 contradicts the station clock, which shows 09.58. A great reminder of how busy Newport used to be. I had been there the month before.
Maybe I hadn't move the camera clock back to winter time !!
@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways Easily done. I have the same problem with my digital camera only being right half the year !!
What a great variety of motive power. Now it is one class 66 after another!
I understand why TfL has introduced the new service. There’s insufficient line and platform capacity between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street. I’m not sure it’s the best option for passengers. Also, the increased number of trains leaving Cardiff Central for the City Line will cause a major conflict for trains from Barry as they have to cross over to access the City Line. Even before the route changes, trains from Barry were often delayed by trains crossing in front of them. It’s a case of squeezing a quart into a pint pot!
ponty station looks terrible :( saying that . all the budd everywhere looks awful
